Unprecedented Snowfall in Greater Kashmir Disrupts Life, Triggers Avalanche Warnings

Greater Kashmir, a region known for its enchanting beauty, has been hit with a record-breaking snowfall causing widespread disruption in daily life and triggering avalanche warnings.

Snowfall Impacts Transportation and Daily Life

The incessant snowfall since early Monday morning has resulted in the closure of vital roads and disrupted air traffic, leaving many residents stranded. The region has recorded the highest snowfall in decades, with Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, receiving over two feet of snow.

“We haven’t seen such heavy snowfall in years,” said a local resident, recounting the difficulties faced due to the sudden change in weather.

Authorities Issue Avalanche Warnings

Given the unprecedented snowfall, the authorities have issued avalanche warnings in several districts. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration are on high alert to deal with any eventuality.

“We urge people living in avalanche-prone areas to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel,” said a spokesperson from the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority.

Power Outages and Infrastructure Damage

The heavy snowfall has also caused widespread power outages, leaving residents without electricity in the freezing cold. Many parts of the region are grappling with infrastructure damage due to the weight of the snow.

“The sudden snowfall has led to power outages, making it difficult for us to keep warm. We hope the authorities act swiftly to restore power,” said a resident of Srinagar.

Government Efforts to Restore Normalcy

The Jammu and Kashmir administration is working round the clock to restore normalcy. Armed forces and local police are assisting in rescue and relief operations. The administration has also set up emergency control rooms to help stranded residents.

“Our priority is to restore connectivity and electricity at the earliest. We are also working to ensure adequate supplies of essentials,” said the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir.

Impact on Tourism

While the heavy snowfall has disrupted life, it has also painted a picturesque landscape attracting tourists. However, the current situation poses a challenge to the tourism industry, with travel restrictions and road blockages hampering tourist movement.

“The snowfall is a visual treat, but the lack of facilities due to the weather conditions is a concern. We hope the situation improves soon,” said a tourist visiting Gulmarg.

As Greater Kashmir grapples with the unexpected snowfall, residents and authorities alike are hoping for a swift return to normalcy. Meanwhile, the meteorological department predicts more snowfall in the coming days, urging residents to stay prepared.
